a slip of the tongue; a verbal lapse; a gaffe; a faux pas; a (verbal) blunder [《米》 《口》 blooper]; a pratfall.

～する make a slip of the tongue; use improper language; make an inappropriate remark [embarrassing statement]; commit a gaffe [faux pas]; 《口》 put [stick] one's foot in one's mouth.

●失言が原因で彼は大臣の座を失った. He lost his cabinet post over an inappropriate remark.

●彼は自分の失言に気がついていなかった. He was unaware that he had committed a gaffe.

●失言の多い首相 a gaffe-prone prime minister.

●失言を取り消す retract [take back, withdraw] an unfortunate [inappropriate] statement

・失言を詫びる apologize for a gaffe [one's improper language]

・失言をなじる take sb to task for making a verbal blunder.
